Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)

Watching Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was such a fun experience! It honestly delivered on everything I was hoping for in a sequel; lots of laughs, that spooky charm, and all the quirky Burton visuals that made the original so great. Seeing Michael Keaton back as Beetlejuice was a blast; he hasn’t missed a beat and still brings that wild, unpredictable energy. Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara slide back into their roles seamlessly, and Jenna Ortega is fantastic as Lydia’s daughter, adding just the right touch of gothic spirit. It’s like all my favourite characters came back with a few new faces to keep things fresh.

One thing I loved about this sequel is how it fully embraced that signature Burton style. The sets, the practical effects, and all those vibrant colours; he really outdid himself, making this afterlife world feel familiar but amped up. It’s refreshing to see a film lean into those old-school effects rather than go heavy on CGI, and the result is a rich, textured world that feels just as strange and wonderful as I remembered. It’s a visual feast, the kind that instantly brings you back to Burton’s Halloween-loving aesthetic, and I found myself smiling at all the little spooky details.

Now, the plot does get a bit crowded at times, especially with the addition of Beetlejuice’s ex-wife, Delores. She’s an interesting character on paper, but honestly, she didn’t add much to the overall story, and I couldn’t help but feel like her role was a bit unnecessary. If they’d trimmed her part down, I think the story would have felt tighter. But hey, with so much going on in the afterlife, a little excess is easy to forgive. The main storyline, especially the focus on Lydia and her daughter, is still strong enough to carry the film and keep you engaged.

The real magic here is the cast; everyone brought their A-game, delivering performances that were both heartfelt and funny. Keaton was hilarious and totally unhinged, and Ryder brought so much warmth and depth to her scenes with Ortega. Watching them together, you feel that mother-daughter connection even as they navigate the weirdness of Beetlejuice’s world. And O’Hara, as always, nailed her role with those perfect comedic moments that had me cracking up. The whole cast made this film an absolute joy.

Smash Hit Score: 7.2/10

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was just what I wanted; a funny, spooky, and nostalgic ride that’s perfect for anyone who loved the original. The story may get a bit busy, but that Burton charm and the amazing cast more than make up for it.
