Dungeons of Hinterberg is an action-RPG with puzzle-platformer vibes, but at its heart, it’s about escaping the daily grind, something we all need once in a while. You play as Luisa, a lawyer who’s burnt out from her job, and she heads to this charming Austrian village that’s been transformed by the sudden appearance of magical dungeons. The whole concept of taking a “slaycation” was intriguing, and I found myself getting lost in the world pretty quickly.
What really grabbed my attention was the art style. The game is just gorgeous. Each area, from snowy mountains to lush forests, has its own distinct colour palette, and the vibrant, cel-shaded visuals make everything pop. It felt like I was stepping into a beautiful painting every time I entered a new region. Exploring these areas was a joy, and I spent a lot of time just wandering around, soaking in the scenery.

When it comes to gameplay, things start off simple enough with basic hack-and-slash combat, but as you unlock more abilities, the game opens up. I loved how the magic you acquire not only helps in combat but also plays a big part in puzzle-solving and getting around the world. It kept things fun, even though the enemy variety was a bit lacking after a while. Still, figuring out how to use your abilities in different ways to tackle the dungeons was really satisfying.
One of the things I appreciated most was the balance between action and downtime. After a day of slaying monsters and solving puzzles, you can kick back in the village, upgrade your gear, and hang out with the locals. It added a nice change of pace, even if it sometimes felt a bit like I was managing stats rather than building deep relationships. Still, the slower moments gave me time to breathe, and I enjoyed deciding how to spend my evenings in the game.

Dungeons of Hinterberg offers a nice escape, blending chill exploration with bursts of action. While the combat could’ve used a bit more variety and the gameplay loop felt a little restrictive at times, I still found myself charmed by its beautiful world and the relaxing pace. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely worth a play if you’re looking for something to unwind with.
