I Saw the TV Glow (2024)

I Saw the TV Glow was one of the most hypnotic movie experiences I’ve had in a while. From the very beginning, I was pulled into this surreal, vibrant world that felt both nostalgic and unsettling. I’m not going to pretend I caught every theme it was exploring, there’s a lot going on here but even without fully grasping it all, I was completely hooked. It’s a unique film that feels like it was made to be felt as much as it was to be understood.

The story centres on Owen and Maddy, two teens whose bond forms over their shared obsession with a show called The Pink Opaque. Their connection felt so real and raw, thanks to the incredible performances by Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine. They perfectly captured the awkwardness and vulnerability of trying to figure out who you are while clinging to something that feels like it gets you. Their chemistry made every scene between them feel authentic and meaningful.

Visually, this movie is an absolute stunner. The neon glow of pinks and purples is both comforting and eerie, making every frame feel alive. There’s one montage where Owen is picking up tapes covered in doodles, and it was such a simple yet powerful sequence that I couldn’t stop thinking about it afterwards. The editing and cinematography work together beautifully, creating a dreamlike rhythm that pulls you deeper into the story.

And don’t get me started on the soundtrack! Every song felt perfectly chosen, adding so much to the film’s atmosphere. The score worked like magic, weaving through the visuals and emotions to tie everything together. After the film was over, I still had that feeling like I’d been on a sensory trip, the kind that sticks with you long after the credits roll.

Smash Hit Score: 7.8/10

Now, I’ll admit, this film won’t be for everyone. It’s experimental and doesn’t hand you all the answers, but honestly, that’s part of what I loved about it. It’s bold, creative, and deeply personal. Even when I wasn’t sure what it was trying to say, I couldn’t help but admire how it said it.
