Longlegs (2024)

After diving into Longlegs, I have to say, this film didn’t quite hit the spot as I expected. Right from the start, it pulls you into its unsettling atmosphere with a sense of dread that lingers long after the credits roll. Maika Monroe absolutely nails her role as FBI agent Lee Harker. She’s flawless! Her performance captures every ounce of Harker’s vulnerability and grit, and it’s impossible not to root for her. Then there’s Nicolas Cage as the villain, Longlegs himself. Let me tell you, Cage is both disgusting and mesmerizing in this role. His grotesque, unsettling look and creepy mannerisms bring an unforgettable edge to the film.

The visuals are a major highlight, too. The cinematography is stunning, especially during one particular montage that’s as beautiful as it is eerie. The way the film plays with aspect ratios, lighting, and framing adds layers of unease and keeps you guessing what’s lurking just out of sight. It’s clear a lot of thought went into making this a visual feast. Every shot feels like it’s meant to draw you deeper into this twisted world.

But I felt the screenplay doesn’t quite live up to the rest of the film. The plot feels pretty average, which is a shame given how strong the performances and visuals are. Some parts of the story introduce fascinating ideas like satanic rituals and psychological trauma but they don’t fully explore them, leaving me wishing for more depth. It’s like the film sets the table for an incredible feast but only serves appetizers 😅

I’ve also got mixed feelings about the pacing and the ending. The first two-thirds of the film seem to take their time building up tension, but then it rushes through some key moments. And that ending? It takes a sharp, unexpected turn that might not work for everyone. While I appreciate a bold conclusion, I can see how some might find it jarring or out of sync with the rest of the film. For me, it’s intriguing enough to make me want to rewatch and see if it hits differently the second time.

Smash Hit Score: 7.6/10

Even with its flaws, Longlegs has a lot going for it. Between Maika Monroe’s standout performance, Nicolas Cage’s unforgettable villain, and the gorgeous cinematography, it’s worth the watch. If you’re into atmospheric horror and don’t mind a story that’s more about vibes than tight plotting, this might just stick with you. Of course, it’s not perfect, but it’s definitely memorable.
