Open Roads

PLAYED ON: PC via PC Game Pass

Annapurna Interactive has always been a favourite of mine for their narrative-driven indie games, and Open Roads definitely caught my eye. The game follows Tess and her mom, Opal, on a road trip to uncover some hidden family secrets. The hand-animated characters paired with 3D environments create a unique, nostalgic vibe. But while the game is visually appealing, the mix of 2D and 3D can feel a bit awkward at times.

Playing Open Roads feels more like stepping into an interactive storybook than a traditional game. I spent most of my time exploring various environments, searching for items to trigger conversations and advance the story. It was relaxing, but also a bit repetitive. Many objects I picked up didn’t contribute much, which made the exploration feel tedious after a while. The voice acting is top-notch, though, and added some much-needed authenticity to Tess and Opal's journey.

Despite its flaws, this game has its charm. The setting and nostalgic elements transported me back to the early 2000s, which I loved. However, the pacing felt off, with emotional moments often falling flat. It's a nice game to unwind with, but it didn’t leave a lasting impact. For its beautiful art and nostalgic feel, it's worth a playthrough, even if it doesn’t quite hit the mark in terms of depth and engagement.

CONCLUSION:

Open Roads offers a nostalgic and visually appealing experience, but its repetitive gameplay and inconsistent pacing hold it back. It's a pleasant game for a relaxed playthrough, though it may not leave a lasting impression. Worth a try for its artistic charm and nostalgic setting.
