Squid Game (Season 02)

When I heard Squid Game was back for a second season, I wasn’t sure how to feel. The first season was such a standout! It was gripping, emotional and wildly original that I couldn’t imagine where they’d go next. Well, after diving into Season 2, I can confidently say it’s not as great as the previous season. There are moments that really shine and keep you hooked, but it doesn’t quite reach the same heights as the original.

The story picks up a couple of years after Gi-hun’s victory. He’s still haunted by everything he went through, but now he’s on a mission to take down the games for good. Of course, he ends up back in the thick of it, and this time we get a few twists like more backstory on the guards and a colourful mix of new players. Some of these characters are great additions, like the quirky rapper with purple hair and the tightly bonded mother-son duo. But honestly, a lot of it feels like déjà vu.

I’ll give credit where it’s due: the production quality is stellar. The sets are even more elaborate, and the games are still nail-bitingly tense. That said, the surprises just aren’t as shocking this time around. It’s like watching your favourite magic trick for the second time; you appreciate the skill but the awe isn’t quite there. They do try to explore deeper themes like morality and group dynamics, but some of it feels a bit heavy-handed and slows things down.

For me, the biggest letdown was the pacing. The first few episodes drag their feet before the action really kicks off and just when things get interesting, the season ends on a frustrating cliffhanger. It’s clear they’re setting up for Season 3 (the final one) but it left me feeling like I’d only gotten half a story. Still there are enough twists and emotional moments to keep you invested if you’re a fan of the first season.

Smash Hit Score: 6.8/10

So, would I recommend it? If you loved Season 1, you’ll probably enjoy revisiting this world. Just go in with tempered expectations. Season 2 has its highs and lows, and while it doesn’t capture the same magic as the original, it’s still an entertaining ride.
