Young Woman and the Sea (2024)

My weekend watch was Young Woman and the Sea on Disney+ and it’s an absolute hidden gem. You may not have heard much about it, but it's one of those films that sneaks up on you with its emotional punch. It’s based on the true story of Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel back in the 1920s. Daisy Ridley, who you probably know from Star Wars, plays Trudy and does an amazing job. Her performance is heartfelt and raw, especially in those gruelling swim scenes that look like they were shot in some pretty rough waters.

What really got me, though, was the emotional depth of the film. It's not just about Trudy's swim; it’s about her journey and the challenges she faced, particularly the societal barriers of being a woman in that era. The film does a fantastic job of highlighting her resilience and the support she got from her family. The script balances drama, comedy, and inspiration perfectly without getting too cheesy, although I must admit, I loved the sentimental bits the most.

TSHC Score: 8.5/10

Overall, Young Woman and the Sea is a film I can’t stop recommending to everyone. It’s inspiring, touching, and beautifully made. I really hope more people discover it on Disney+. It’s one of those films that makes you want to learn more about the unsung heroes of history. Hollywood doesn’t make many films like this anymore, so I’m glad Disney took a chance on it. If you’re looking for something that’s going to leave you feeling uplifted, definitely give this one a watch.
